This evolving guide is a collection of tips for renters of Tesla vehicles around the Perth region. It may also be helpful for renters and owners of other electric cars, and some suggestions also apply to other parts of Australia and the world.
Useful Apps
To enhance your Tesla renting experience, consider downloading and signing in to the following apps before embarking on a multi-day rental period:
Tesla App
The Tesla app allows you to conveniently lock, unlock, start, and monitor your rented Tesla. After installing the app, create an account and ask the Tesla owner to send an invitation to your registered email address. With Bluetooth enabled on your phone, you can enjoy the “Walk-Away Door Lock” feature, which automatically locks and unlocks the car when your phone is in proximity.
You can avoid unnecessary ‘idle fees’ charged by charging networks to reduce congestion by setting up charging notifications on your Tesla app. Once your rented Tesla is fully charged, you will receive an alert on the app to prompt you to move your vehicle and free up the charging station for other EV drivers. This way, you can avoid excess fees and help alleviate charging congestion in your area.
If you don’t want to use the app, you can use a supplied Tesla RFID card to access and start the vehicle.
Chargefox
Chargefox is Australia’s largest and fastest-growing charging network. It is advisable to utilize the Chargefox app to check the speed, cost, and availability of Chargefox charging stations. Once your vehicle is plugged in, you can also initiate the charging process through the app.
In case the app or mobile signal is unavailable, an RFID card may be provided by the hirer for charging activation.
Ampol AmpCharge
Ampol is installing fast charging stations at various service stations in the coming years. With the Ampol AmpCharge app, you can find these charging stations and start charging your vehicle. It’s essential to note that unlike Chargefox, there is currently no backup RFID card option, so the app needs to be used for both charging and payment.
Plugshare
Download PlugShare, a free app available for iOS, Android, and web users. PlugShare helps you locate charging stations, share reviews, and connect with other electric vehicle owners.
To make the most of PlugShare, access the Filter icon in the top left corner of the app and select the following plug options:
Tesla (Fast) – This option displays Tesla Supercharger stations such as Karrinyup, Eaton (Bunbury), Williams (towards Albany), Lancelin (north of Perth) and Margaret River. These high-speed stations can charge most Teslas from 0% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Due to the popularity of Tesla vehicles in WA, these stations may experience congestion at times. The cost ranges between 55c and 80c per kWh, which translates to approximately $30-$50 for a complete charge of a Tesla 3/Y vehicle. Charges are billed to the credit card on the owner’s Tesla account.
Quick Charge (CCS/SAE Combo) – This option reveals non-Tesla fast charging stations, including the Chargefox-managed state government and RAC networks, Ampol networks, and other third-party chargers. These high-speed stations can charge most Teslas from 0% to 80% in approximately 30-90 minutes. As these stations cater to various electric vehicle brands, they might experience congestion. Check the respective network’s app for real-time station utilization. The cost typically ranges between 45c and 60c per kWh, amounting to approximately $20-$30 for a complete charge of a Tesla 3/Y vehicle. Some stations may offer free or low-cost charging (around 15c per kWh), but they are usually busier or subject to conditions such as paid parking.
Tesla – These chargers, known as Destination Chargers, are also accessible by selecting the Charging button on your Tesla’s map screen and selecting the single bolt icon. Destination Chargers may have specific conditions, such as being exclusively for hotel guests, though some shopping centers may allow their use while visiting. While these chargers are generally in use and require a few hours for a full charge, they are typically free of charge.
Optionally, you can also select Type 2 and Three Phase plugs, but please note that these require separate cables to be provided with your rental car. The AC-powered Type 2 chargers, Tesla Destination Chargers, and Three Phase points can charge at up to 22kW (based on the vehicle), which is faster than home charging but not as fast as the DC-powered Fast and Superchargers mentioned earlier. Type 2 chargers require a separate Type 2-Type 2 cable, while the Three Phase plugs shown on the map necessitate a dedicated charger, such as the Tesla UMC (universal mobile connector) equipped with an optional Three Phase adapter.
If using multiple cables and charging networks seems complex, you can comfortably travel throughout most of South-West WA using only the Tesla (Fast) and Chargefox fast chargers without requiring an extra cable.
Charging
Around Perth, we recommend the following chargers for a number of reasons including speed and availability:
- RAC Head Office (Chargefox) – Located in the CBD, this Rapid Charger can get very busy. Consider alternative options if it’s congested
- Ampol Foodary East Perth – This charger can serve as a backup option in case the RAC Head Office charger is busy.
- UWA DC Charger – Another backup option to consider if the RAC Head Office charger is busy.
- Ampol Foodary Belmont – Located close to Perth Airport, this charger is ideal for those needing a quick top-up after visiting the Airport or towns to the East.
- Gwelup Shopping Centre – Situated near Mitchell Freeway, this charger serves as an alternative option if Karrinyup is crowded.
- Ross’s Discount Home Centre – This charger is conveniently located close to Midland and Guildford, making it the last fast charger before heading east along Great Eastern Highway.
Heading South to Margaret River or Augusta, many Tesla owners stop at Eaton Fair Tesla Superchargers or Treendale Chargefox. However, most drivers can reach their destination without a top-up. Other options, such as Harvey or Busselton Jetty are available, but may also experience congestion during weekends or holidays.
Conclusion
With the help of various apps and charging networks, renting a Tesla in the Perth region becomes an enjoyable and stress-free experience. By following the suggested charging stations, renters will have access to reliable charging options while exploring the area. Whether you’re a Tesla owner or renting an electric vehicle, this guide provides essential tips for a seamless journey in Western Australia’s capital city.
